nigeria_flagNigeria, the defending champions of the African Youth Championships flopped Monday as the Flying Eagles defending their title crashed in a 1-0 defeat to Mali.

The Flying Eagles suffered a 1-0 defeat at the heads of Mali’s U-20 team in the first Group B match played in Oran on Sunday.

Nigeria failed to recover from a 12th minute Adama Niane’s goal, missing chances after chances with Kayode Olanrewaju and substitute, Abdulahi Gero as the major culprits.

Meanwhile, FC Nantes of France striker Niane described his goal as a revenge on Nigeria.

”The goal is for the Mali people who watched the way Nigeria beat us at the Nations Cup last month,” he told a post-match press briefing.

The result leaves Flying Eagles chief coach Sam John Obuh under pressure as opinions are already divided among Nigerians on the rationale behind the recall of seven of the 2011 Flying Eagles’ set which campaigned at the AYC in South Africa and the World Youth Championship in Canada
