Police in northern Nigeria confirmed that they’ve arrested 19 people over the slaying of the region’s dominant gubernatorial candidate.
Police commissioner Mohammed Abubakar said Sunday the suspects were found in Maiduguri.
Modu Fannami Gubio was the Borno state candidate of the All Nigeria People’s Party, a conservative party dominant in Nigeria’s Muslim north, for the upcoming April elections. He was killed Friday with six others.
Gubio’s death sparked panic in a region already under attack by aradical Muslim sect.
Abubakar says police continue to seek members of the banned Boko Haram sect, and that one police officer was killed in the search on Sunday.
The group has attacked churches and engineered a massive prison break in recent months.
