Dora Akunyili, PDP’s Ex-Iron Lady Dies Of Cancer At 59One of Nigeria’s most adorable politician and future political hopeful, Dora Akunyili has died. She gave up the ghost  following her lost battle with  cancer.

The death of the former Information Minister and former Director General of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control was relayed on Saturday after she gave up losing a battle against cancer.

She was  aged 59 years.

According to family sources, Professor Akunyili died on Saturday morning in an Indian hospital where she had been taken recently following a major fall in her health condition which is cancer-related ailments.

She is the third member of the ongoing National Conference to have died since it was inaugurated March 17, 2014 by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Akunyili served as Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Communications between December 17, 2008 and December 17, 2010, was flown abroad about a month ago and has since been receiving treatment in an India Hospital.

Her spokesman, Isaac Umunna, expressed surprise at the development when contacted. Professor Akunyili stole the heart of millions of Nigerians across the World after the death of former President Musa Yar’Adua, betraying the hypocrisy of some members of the ruling party who were usurping the presidential power of the former leader as he laid sick in a Saudi Arabia private Hospital.

She accused the cabal of insincerity and dishonesty as they engaged in cocktail of financial misappropriation withdrawing and embezzling the nation in an unprecedented usurpation of presidential power.  Dora singled handedly tackled the invisible PDP cabal members charging them  to tell Nigerians the true position of the indisposed leader as other series of underground activities which centered on indiscriminate contract award and nation’s treasury looting were taken place.

The interregnum was the worse in the nation’s history as the cabal members  held the nation into ransom leaving the country without a leader for about six months and usurping presidential powers.

She would also be remembered for promoting the Nigerian fashion industry as during her tenure of office, she made it mandatory  wearing Nigerian fabrics made in different forms to promote the nation’s fashions industry. Among dignitaries that had visited her India where she was accompanied by her husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, was the former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi. Dora Nkem Akunyili was born on July 14, 1954 in Makurdi, Benue State.

She is a pharmacist and governmental administrator who has gained international recognition and won hundreds of awards for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights.

Akunyili ran for election as Senator for Anambra Central on the All Progressive Grand Alliance [APGA] platform in April 2011 but was defeated by Chris Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). She immediately sent a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission disputing the result. Traces of her dwindling health emerged only few months ago as she started to lose weight and was diagnosed for a cancer-related ailment.
