Edo Election Tragedy: 4 dead as boat conveying materials capsized in midwater


Two inspectors, a constable and an Independent National Electoral Commission ad hoc official died on Saturday while conveying election materials to Ologbo, Edo State.

PUNCH learnt that the speed boat conveying them capsized on its way to a riverside polling station.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, confirmed the development in an SMS to our correspondent, Comfort Oseghale, describing it as “sad.”

He said, “Two inspectors and one constable died; two policemen and one prison official survived.
“One INEC official also died. Only the body of an inspector has been recovered.”

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, also confirmed the development.
INEC also confirmed the incident in a post on Facebook.

“INEC condoles with the Nigeria Police and families of party agents who died in the boat that capsized in the Ologbo riverine area while bearing INEC materials and officials.
“Further details will be provided as we get them,” it said.
