EFCC in action

LONDON:15/06/2011

The Nigeria nation and her nationals have been agog with hopes and expectations about the on-going trial of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives  Dimeji Bankole, with many of us expressing that corruption in our nation  may be finding a real match in the set up of the anti-graft Agency, the EFCC.

But judging by history, EFCC has not made the real impact expected of them and events have shown that the amount of money devoted to the cause of corruption fight in Nigeria has not been justified in the operation of the Agency.

There had been several misgivings about the Agency as it has proved itself ineffective to fight corruption in our country.

This news forum is challenging EFCC to come up with its report of activities and engagements since Dame Farida Waziri took over the mantle of leadership in the agency as it is not not an overstatement to say that the foundation on which EFCC had been established is now  seriously weakened with the  real intentions now misplaced  and derailed due to glaring insincerity, obvious bravado and apparent lack of wit to tackle corruption genuinely in Nigeria. The Agency needs real overhauling.

The modus operandi of the Agency has been nothing short of creating more opportunities for corruption in Nigeria through weak allegations and charges against their victims and propped up media hype to prove EFCC is working while the agency is even worse than many they are incarcerating.

Hundreds of corrupt Nigerians who have brought the nation to her kneels through large scale corruption are walking the streets today with EFCC having been settled or the agency looking the other way, pretending there was no case to answer.

EFCC

If not, how come, many of the governors from across the country are still walking the streets today, despite their proven criminal embezzlement of public fund.

If the governors are enjoying the immunity granted by the constitution, how come those governors who stole the mandate of the people are enjoying such immunity because the fact that the position they had occupied was stolen from the first day in office give enough pedigree for established criminal case… then the issue of how the public fund was disbursed or spent.

Many State governors who are internationally acclaimed rogues due to their dodgy victory in previous elections by now should be paying for the atrocity of both stealing the people mandate and embezzling the money meant for the welfare of the people.

Many have spent more than four years as state governors without anything to show for their tenure. This shows that EFCC figures in their anti crime activities are not adding up.

It is an established fact that the trial and eventual incarceration of former Lagos State Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Chief Olabode George was only a ridiculous exercise as the nature and gravity of the offence far outweighs the given punishment. The resultant end of the case and the aftermath of his serving less than two years in prison has laid credence to the fact that the nation’s laws that guide against corruption to start with is so weak. Rather than establishing a tribunal that meet out a stronger penalty and punishment against corrupt public officers, the agency has relied on the vulnerable courts which are exposed to legal handtwist by lawyers.

There is no doubt that EFCC has embarked on shadow chasing in its fights against corruption in Nigeria.

The handpicking of victims and in most cases lack of prosecution as many are arrested is indicative of the facts that  EFCC  is  hypocritical and ineffective, existing  just to dazzle and not rattle.

The on-going process of arrest and current incarceration of the former speaker of House of Representatives, Speaker Dimeji Bankole as we see it  may have been fraught with so many inconsistencies even before  the prosecution commences.

EFCC: A bravado or genuine sense of purpose?

It has appeared as nothing  more than a shadow chasing only aimed at making some impression that EFCC as an anti-graft agency is working.

The activities of EFCC have not convinced the nation that it is a well meaning agency as it appears now to be serving the interest of some influential Nigerians.

If not, how come the former speaker is being incarcerated for offences that were supposed to have been committed by the procurement and administrative sections of the Nation’s  House of  Representatives. Could Bankole have engaged in forgery of receipts and procurement papers?

Is  Bankole responsible for the general procurement of all essential needs of the House? Is he the only one  in the corruption crime where the procurement of items for the house neede to pass through many administrative procedures? If not why is EFCC failing in releasing the names of those allegedly wanted but are still elusive on the price inflating crime?

The case of corruption against Bankole appears more of bravado- another public relations stunt aimed at convincing the public that AFCC is working. If not,  Nigerians across the globe are watching how the case will unfold. We have 100% assurance that the Nigerian public are being fooled in this case. Bankole must have stepped on some toes and want to prove they are more powerful than him and therefore must prove this. By the nation’s constitution, he is not guilty until proven so by the law court.

The nation for long has been so bastardized with coruptive practices.

We   need more positive actions aimed at bringing to books those responsible for the plundering of our nation   into economic anarchy and social insecurity… not the lame duck approach of EFCC.

The body responsible for the arrest of the former speaker, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission may have engaged in shadow -chasing  so far, there seem not to be a real zeal for drawing out facts about the case.

The case may have been weakened by current claim by Bankole lawyers that without an existing Attorney General of the Federation any action against him could be illegal. Is the agency so ignorant of the law or just playing on the intelligence of over 150million Nigerians?

Then how come Nigeria is witnessing the incarceration of South-West political heavyweights in PDP while nothing incriminating is not being  discovered from those governors who either stole their mandate or only diverted the resources of the nation to their personal coffers?. Is Davis Mark such a saintly soul and need not to be pried into/ More and more questions…

Is EFCC a serious Agency or does the nation need a major overhauling of the Agency?

Please contribute and let us hear your point of view.

Are we just witnessing a bravado aimed at giving the impression to all of us that we only pretend to be fighting corruption, or are really nursing a sincerity of purpose?

Nigeria must move forward, not  through p retentive hypocrisy of the EFCC, not at all.
