London on Wednesday ran into panic over the rumoured death of former Biafran Leader, Dim Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
The purported information had swept through the city as various online news sources including Nigeria’s based Daily Times carried the news conspicuously believing them to be the truth.
The report came after social network fora, twitters and facebook bombarded members with information about Ikemba’s demise which were later found to be without foundation.
Reacting from Nigeria, Anambra State Governor Peter Obi dismissed the rumour stating that Ojukwu was still alive and responding to treatment in an undisclosed hospital in London.
However, Sahara reporters which unveiled certain facts about the genuine condition of Ikemba almost three weeks ago, tracing him to a London suburb Hospital quoted one of the former rebel leaders’ sons as dispelling the rumours.
“Despite rumors swirling on the Internet that Ikemba Odumegwu-Ojukwu has died in a London hospital, Saharareporters has ascertained from his direct family as well as sources within the hospital that the former Biafran leader remains alive”, the online news source said.
“In a telephone interview, Okigbo Odumegwu-Ojukwu, one of Ikemba’s children, stated, “It is not true that my father died.” Mr. Okigbo Odumegwu-Ojukwu resides in London and is constantly in touch with the hospital personnel caring for his father”, SR reported
“The continued rumour is an indication that all is still not well with the Ikemba’s condition and governor Obi and his cohorts owe the people the duty of right information”, an Igbo leader said in London after he was contacted on the rumour. “Enough of this misinformation”, the old Igbo man warned.
The Ikemba has been marked as a recipient of a special honour in this year’s Igbo Day celebration and Honours (Ubochi Igbo ) Awards, coming up in London on August 20, this year.
Last week, some leaders of Igbo community in London challenged Governor Peter Obi and others currently managing the former warlord’s health to come out with his recent pictures or a video recording that will dispel more rumors of his death, claiming Ojukwu’s current health scenario is a re-run of what happened during the last days of the former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua whose health condition stalemated the nation for almost six months with lies, prank plays and political make-believes ruling the entire nation .
In recent days, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra had used several newspapers and websites to create the impression that Ikemba’s condition had improved.
