Mama Hannah Dideolu Awolowo Passes On Aged 99-Mama Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, the wife of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, Nigeria’s foremost politician and one of the greatest sons of Africa has passed away. She died solemnly in her sleep early on Saturday morning in her country home of Ikenne in Ogun State of Nigeria.
Mama passed-on Saturday morning precisely 28 years after the departure of her husband who died in 1987 after a brief illness.
She was a major part of her husband’s politically eventful life and her dedication and loyalty to Papa Awo’s successful professional and political life earned her a decorative appellate of ” A jewel of inestimable value”, a coinage put together to celebrate her political activism and domestic success in the management of Awolowo family life, handlingthe family’s domestic needs with utmost zeal and precise courage and agility Her life was eventfuljust like her husband’s, especially complimenting Awo’s political sojourn.
Mrs. Awolowo, is conceived by many critics as a firm but very passionate personality. To her departed husband’s, she was priceless which created the sort of high quality status she was held by Awo clan. Such valuable and expressive traits accorded her `high recognition across Nigeria and beyond. She was a great administrator in her own right and was seen as a major aspect of her husband’s success in his politically loaded and highly achieving business life, attaining popularity and respect as a trust-able confidante of her late husband.
Mama Dideolu until her death was holding forth Awo’s political banner as she represented the image and all the left-overs of the sage’s political legacy. She was always upholding Awos’ tremendous political influence and cultural legacy which rooted in Yoruba tradition and culture. Too some extent, she controlled the husband’s political base of South West with tremendous influence, especially being a key factor after the husband’s departure in 1985. Her dedication to Yoruba cause earned her the Yeye Oba of Ile Ife, a motherly role for the Ooni of Ife, who is a symbol of Yoruba unity and cultural endowment.
She was highly respected and had the honour of being a major focus by every succeeding government of the federation, calling on her at certain point of celebration, especially during her birthday period to felicitate and sympathise with her due to her lonely status she was held missing her husband for so long after long exit to the other World.
Mrs. Awolowo’s grand daughter is the wife of Nigeria’s current Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo.
On Saturday evening, Aisha Buhari, the wife of the President, MuhammduBuhari paid a condolence call on the family home of Awolowos in Ikenne.
Mama Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo has been described as an inimitable personality who could only be described in superlatives.
In his condolence message on the passing of the matriach of the Awolowo dynasty, Otunba Gbenga Daniel described Mama Awo as a charming woman who exhumes humility, generosity, courage, resilience, industry and vision.
The two-term governor of Ogun State described her as as a strong personality magnetic woman who impressed herself indelibly on the minds of not only her family and kinsmen but her race and the nation in general.
“Kind, compassionate, strict but loving, caring and sensitive, Mama was a great humanitarian and strong believer in service to the community. Undoubtedly, she was born into a man’s world, arguably to play a man’s role”.
“Mama’s support ignited the flame of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s long held visions as she was ready to spend her life side by side her husband in their patriotic, humanitarian and political dreams”.
Continuing, he stressed that “Mama’s life was one selfless devotion as she sacrificed so much of her youth, her adult years and ultimately her life for the benefit of her people in spite of harassment, arrest and even death which were very real possibilities”.
“For a woman of remarkable bravery, she surmounted all odds following her husband and staying by him through all vicissitudes; imprisonment inclusive.
“Firm but noble, full of charm, grace and beauty, her intellect combined with her unique resilience made her one of a kind. Even at almost a century old, Mama was still cheerful and as sharp as a tack”.
“Rather than mourn, we should celebrate her life so full of love an the way we can best honour her is to pray Almighty God to grant her eternal rest and the family the strength to bear the great loss.
