Nigerian soccer star dies in car crash in Greece

Nigerian Super Eagle defender, Olubayo Adefemi is dead.

Adefemi died when his car skidded off the road after he lost control of it as he was travelling from Xanthi to Salonika in Greece.

The Skoda Xanthi’s Nigerian international Olubayo Adefemi was reportedly ptting some finishing touches on his wedding plans. when he died in a car accident, Greek police said on Monday.

The 25-year-old defender lost control of his car on the Egnatia motorway while driving from Xanthi to Salonika in the Kavala region of Northern Greece.

The former Rapid Bucharest player was on his way to finalise details of his wedding when the accident happened, police said.

Adefemi signed for Xanthi last summer and made 24 appearances for the club, scoring twice. He has also played three times for Nigeria.

“The Super League and the entire Greek football family would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy for the family of Olubayo Adefemi who died tragically in a car accident,” league organisers said in a statement on Monday.

Greek media report that the 25-year-old Xanthi defender skidded off a road on Monday morning while driving to Salonika to finalise arrangements for his wedding.

Adefemi joined Xanthi from French side Boulogne last summer and had made 24 league appearances this season, scoring twice.
A statement on said: “The Greek Football Federation expresses its grief at the untimely death of Nigerian international and Skoda Xanthi footballer Olubayo Adefemi in a car accident. United, the members of the Greek Football Federation board and family express the sincerest of condolences to his family and relatives, and also to Xanthi.”

  3. Perhaps, one may asked if Nigeria is the only country good enough to mourn footballers. Barely three months ago, Nigerians received a heart breaking shock of the death of Uche Okafor in America. Today, another unexpected news of the death of a talented youngster, femi is announced again. Well, all i have to say is that death will pay for all it has stolen form us .
