Political Kidnapping: Popular lawyer, Kayode Ajulo abducted in Abuja

Kayode Ajulo
Human rights lawyer and political activist, Barrister Kayode Ajulo has been kidnapped by unknown abductors in Abuja who drove him to an unknown destination.

He was abducted just briefly as he finished with a radio interview programme where he had laid down plans and manifestos for his senatorial election.

Mr Ajulo has been established as the most favoured Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT-Abuja), and his political stature had grown beyond all other contestants as the man likely to win over his other contestants.

According to reports, he had gone to Aso Radio station, Katampe Hill and while on air, the assailants ambushed him. Shortly after the programme, he was accosted by four gunmen as he was about to enter his younger brother’s car.

Two of the assailants overpowered him and forced him into the car of his junior brother, Toye.

According to a source, “they later headed for Kubwa-Kaduna Highway. But when they got to Dutse Alhaji Junction, they forced Toye to come down. After seeing him off to the bush, the kidnappers later put Kayode into their own car.

He was driven to an unknown destination while no efforts has been made to contacted his relatives.

It was gathered that the humanitarian lawyer already, sensing that his life had been threatened because of his political ambition informed the FCT Commissioner of Police of a major threat to his life.

There had been pressure on the Abuja senatorial candidate to step down from his ambition, an indication that he is being worked upon by some politicians playing tribal cards.

Another source lamented: “When the pressure and threats became intense, he wrote to the Commissioner of Police. But nothing was done by the police till he was abducted yesterday.”

When his relatives got to the State Anti-Robbery Squad Unit (SARS), they learnt that his alert file just got there yesterday.

His elder brother, Gbenga, said: “The last time I talked to him was at about 2pm. I have not heard from him again.

“But we have reported the case at the State Anti-Robbery Squad Unit (SARS) and they are working on it.”
According to one of his associates: “As a rights activist, Kayode is not against anybody. But he speaks his mind for the good of the society.”

“I plead with the kidnappers to release him. He is a lawyer, who is trying to survive. If they are demanding money from him, he does not have at all. And if it is political, I know he is trying to contest election under the Labour Party, but he believes in a free and fair poll.

“I am appealing to these gunmen to release him in the interest of democracy in Nigeria. This is a lawyer who appears in court without demanding money from anybody.”

Police spokesman Moshood Jimoh confirmed the incident.
